BBC pundit Michael Stewart has voiced his view that Brendan Rodgers is not to blame for Celtic’s poor season.
With Celtic failing to retain the Scottish League Cup and currently a point behind Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership, questions have rightly been asked of Rodgers and the Celtic squad, but Stewart has refused to criticise both.
Stewart said: [BBC Sport], “For me, the biggest difference from last season is that the spine of the team has been missing. That is it.
“I mean, Brendan Rodgers, for me, wants to play football the same way as Ange Postecoglou.
“There might be the odd nuanced difference here and there, but nothing that would mark a significant difference with regards to how performances have been.”
With Celtic seven points clear of Rangers in September, it is clear why frustration has become apparent from supporters this season.
To blame one factor for the Hoops’ problems seems too simple.
A combination of factors has hampered the season, including injuries, signings failing to adapt, and Rodgers himself at times not getting the best out of the squad.
Celtic are still in contention for the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup, despite the belief that this season has been a disappointment.
If Rodgers can negotiate his way to both, it marks a respectable first year back at the club, despite criticisms of him throughout this season.
With the Irishman already discussing plans for next season and how he can improve the squad, despite the chance that Celtic don’t retain the Scottish Premiership, Rodgers looks to be sticking around for the time being.
