It is known that Celtic were in the market to sign a left-back this January. When the window came to an end last night, however, no such player had entered the building.
Particularly with Greg Taylor’s injury, the club’s failure to bring in a left-sided full-back is concerning, but they did try. A name that was long-linked with the Hoops throughout last month was Owen Beck.
A move for the Welsh internationalist would have certainly appeased supporters but after he played seven minutes for Liverpool away at Bournemouth on the 21st of January, he was ruled out of coming to the Scottish champions due to the fact players can only turn out for two clubs in a season.
Later in the window, Beck returned to Dundee, where he is now back to plying his trade. Recently, he was asked about Celtic’s interest but admitted that his mind is on other things: “People speak about interest from other clubs but I try to focus on the club I’m playing for”, he said (Football Scotland).
“That’s not really my job to listen to who is interested in me. I was happy at Liverpool but when the opportunity to come back to Dundee was there it was a no-brainer. It’s nice if teams are interested in you, it’s a positive thing.”
One can only wonder where Beck would be now had he not come on for Liverpool on the South Coast a few weeks ago. Signing the 21-year-old would have been a sensible move by Celtic, but potentially his name is one to keep an eye on come the summer.
