Scotland manager Steve Clarke has offered a glimmer of hope regarding the injury status of Celtic captain Callum McGregor, dispelling concerns that he might be sidelined for the remainder of the season.
Despite rumours suggesting a lengthy absence, Clarke’s comments hint at a less severe situation for the influential midfielder.
McGregor, a key figure for both Celtic and the Scotland national team, has been absent from the last two matches for the Hoops due to a calf/Achilles issue. This came after he was substituted at halftime during Celtic’s emphatic 7-1 win over Dundee.
The situation had led to speculation about the severity of his injury, especially after Brendan Rodgers reported inconclusive results from scans.
With the national team gearing up for the upcoming international break, McGregor’s absence was noted, but Clarke’s update provides a positive outlook.
Speaking to The Scotsman, Clarke said, “I had a brief chat with Callum this week because I knew he was going to be missing this camp, but no big issues moving forward, I don’t think.”
Celtic has felt the impact of injuries this season, with last season’s stand-out stars McGregor, Cameron Carter-Vickers, and Reo Hatate all spending time on the sidelines.
The absence of these experienced players has been keenly felt, especially in crucial matches. However, there’s optimism around Hatate’s return for the game against Livingston, signalling a boost for Celtic as they navigate a critical phase of the season.
As for McGregor, further updates on his fitness are anticipated in the coming days, likely before or during Rodgers’ next media conference.
