Celtic defender Maik Nawrocki has named his candidate for Player of the Season, and it won’t surprise many supporters.
The defender has made just 10 appearances since joining the Hoops for five million euros (Transfermarkt) from Legia Warszaw last summer. Nawrocki has watched Celtic longer than he’s played for them this season.
Similarly to many supporters, the German-born Poland international thinks that Matt O’Riley has been The Bhoys’ standout player so far this campaign despite a recent drop-off. The centre-half recently spoke to Topps UK.
He said: “My SPFL Player of the Season so far is Matt O’Riley.
“I think he’s having an amazing season with his goals and assists. He’s very important for us.”
Across 39 appearances for Celtic this campaign in all competitions, O’Riley has registered 26 goal contributions. He is in double figures for both goals and assists and although he has underwhelmed lately, one cannot get away from the sensational season he’s had.
The recent news that the Hoops have expressed their desire to sign Paulo Bernardo permanently does beg questions over O’Riley’s future, but the Denmark internationalist did recently admit that even though Atletico Madrid’s January interest was “cool”, he wasn’t upset that he didn’t leave Glasgow.
