Ex Celt Says “Everyone knew” Callum McGregor Would Be Club Captain One Day

Former Celtic right-back Jeremie Frimpong says it was common knowledge that Callum McGregor would go on to captain the club one day.

The vivacious right-back, who is now starring for Bundesliga title hopefuls Bayer Leverkusen, recently expressed his gratitude for the chance he was given in Glasgow.

Frimpong spent a year and a half with the Hoops before moving on to Germany, and within those 18 months or so, he and his teammates could tell McGregor would one day be skipper. “I knew Callum would be the captain after Scott [Brown]”, Frimpong told Glasgow Times.

“Everyone knew it. I think it was pretty obvious as he has all the attributes you want in a captain. Not like me! I could never be the captain!

“But Callum is fantastic on and off the pitch. It’s no surprise to me to see him become a successful Celtic captain, winning the league again and the Treble last season.”

If Celtic are to once more lift the title this campaign, Frimpong understands that having McGregor fit is crucial. He said: “He’s so important to the team and if he’s back in the team again for the remaining games, I’ve got no doubt he can lead them to more trophies.”

Between now and the end of the season, the Hoops are in the hunt for a double. The next nine (potentially ten) games will define the success of their campaign.

With a growing number of returns of key players, fans are developing a quiet sense of encouragement. The stars feel as though they could be aligning for Brendan Rodgers and his men at the perfect time.
