Manchester United’s search for defensive reinforcements has seen them keep a close eye on Bayer Leverkusen’s right-back, Jeremie Frimpong. [Manchester Evening News]
The Dutch defender, who has been a standout in Leverkusen’s unbeaten run in the league, was previously shortlisted by United as a potential addition to their squad.
Frimpong’s impressive performance was highlighted in Leverkusen’s recent 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich, where he came off the bench to score the third goal. This form has not gone unnoticed by major European clubs, including Manchester United, who are considering bolstering their defensive options.
An intriguing aspect of any potential deal for Frimpong is the financial benefit for Celtic. The Scottish giants are entitled to 30% of any profit Leverkusen make from the sale of Frimpong, thanks to a clause in the deal that took him from Glasgow to Leverkusen. With Frimpong reportedly having a €40m (£34.7m) release clause in his contract [Sky Germany], Celtic could stand to earn around £6.2m should he move for that amount.
Manchester United had engaged in discussions with Frimpong’s representatives last year, viewing him as a target for the 2023 summer transfer window.
Since then, Frimpong has solidified his commitment to Leverkusen by signing a new contract that extends until 2028, in October 2023.
At 23 years old, a move to one of Europe’s big clubs doesn’t seem too far away.
