    Behind Mikey Johnston’s Celtic Exit

Mikey Johnston departed Celtic on deadline day, joining English Championship side West Brom on loan until the end of the season. There is no option to buy in the deal.

The move is Johnston’s second temporary one away from the Hoops, with him spending last season on loan at Vitoria Guimaraes in Portugal. There, the wide-man had a solid year and he will be aiming for more of the same at The Hawthorns.

Currently fifth in England’s second tier, The Baggies are pushing for promotion. Johnston will want to help them reach the English Premier League after admitting his move to join them has been in the pipeline for a while. He said (Football Scotland): “I think the deal has been rumbling on since the start of the window, so I’m just happy to get it over the line.”

For Celtic this season, the 24-year-old made twelve appearances. During this time, he registered three goal contributions although some of his performances left much to the imagination.

Brendan Rodgers openly admitted Johnston had a lot of tactical development to undergo, and the double-treble-winning boss will likely be happy to have the winger out of his hair for now.
